On one recent Sunday morning, for the children’s sermon, Rebecca asked, “Who developed the first wireless communication?” The answers included Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, and Benjamin Franklin… but the answer was “God!”
God has offered wireless communication since He created the first human – prayer. He even offers a great daily plan, with unlimited talk minutes. We can talk with God anytime, any place. We can use fancy words, or just silence while being in His presence. We can tell Him anything – what we want, how we feel, what we are grateful for, anything. God can take anything, and I think sometimes we forget that.
“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18
Prayer is basically communicating with God. It can mean offering praise, confessing something to Him, or even expressing our needs. Prayer brings us into God’s presence and brings us closer to understanding His will for us. It also means listening to God, asking that He help us understand His will.
My mother prays a lot, and she often says, “I hope the Lord doesn’t get tired of me talking to him.” I told her I was sure he was always happy to hear from her, and it was in his job description.
“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4: 16
As Christians, through prayer, we have access to the Lord, the Creator of the universe, at any time, any place, and with the full assurance that He is listening and that He will answer. Prayer is a two-way conversation. We are saying that we recognize that we are not God and realize our place in this world. We also gain strength from God and show that our trust is in Him.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4: 6-7
